Prof. Dr.-Ing. Timo Mappes (* 18.08.1976) arbeitet als Professor für Geschichte der Physik mit Schwerpunkt Wissenschaftskommunikation für die Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (FSU) und ist Gründungsdirektor des Deutschen Optischen Museums (D.O.M.).

Während seines Studiums arbeitete Timo Mappes 2000–2001 am CAMD, dem Synchrotron der Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, USA. Er schloss das Studium des Maschinenbaus an der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) 2003 ab. Innerhalb von 2,8 Jahren promovierte Timo Mappes mit Auszeichnung auf der Prozessoptimierung der Röntgenlithografie im Submikrometerbereich zum Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften an der Fakultät für Maschinenbau der Universität Karlsruhe (TH).

Unmittelbar nach seiner Verteidigung wurde er Mitglied des kleinen Kernteams zur Erstellung des Antrags der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) im Rahmen der Deutschen Exzellenzinitiative, welcher im Oktober 2006 zur Ernennung der Universität Karlsruhe als Spitzenhochschule bzw. Eliteuniversität führte und für die Einrichtung 96 Mio Euro einwarb.

Im Anschluss trat Timo Mappes eine Postdoktoranden-Stelle im Bereich der Mikrooptik an. Wenige Monate später wurde er als Koordinator des Moduls Forschung-Lehre-Innovation ins Projektteam zur Erstellung des Konzepts für das Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) aufgenommen. Im Sommer 2007 warb Timo Mappes Mittel für eine unabhängige Nachwuchsgruppe am KIT ein. Seitdem forschte er mit seiner interdisziplinären Gruppe an der Entwicklung von Lab-on-a-Chip-Systemen auf Polymerbasis mit integrierten organischen Lasern, an neuen miniaturisierten Lasern, an der Entwicklung photonischer Resonatoren und an optischen Bänken mit hohem Aspektverhältnis für biologische Anwendungen. Im November 2011 schloss Timo Mappes seine Habilitation an der Fakultät Maschinenbau des KIT im Fachgebiet Mikrosystemtechnik ab.

In der Lehre engagierte sich Timo Mappes mit einer eigenen Vorlesungen im Hauptstudium / Master am KIT und war fünf Jahre als Mentor für die Doktoranden der Research Area Optical Systems der Karlsruhe School of Optics and Photonics (KSOP) tätig und schließlich bis zu seinem Ausscheiden aus dem KIT auch PI (Principle Investigator) und Mitglied des Executive Board der KSOP.
In seiner Forschungsarbeit ist Timo Mappes Autor von gut 200 Publikationen, darunter gut ein Dutzend eingeladene Konferenzbeiträge und über 50 ISI-referierte Originalarbeiten als Zeitschriftenartikel (rund die Hälfte als Erst- oder Senior-Autor). Sein h-index beträgt 19. Im Sommersemester 2010 arbeitete Timo Mappes für sechs Monate als visiting professor an der Technical University of Denmark (DTU) bei Kopenhagen, Dänemark. Im Frühjahr 2011 war als professeur invité eingeladen an die Université de Franche-Comté nach Besançon, Frankreich.
Zum Oktober 2012 wechselte Timo Mappes in die Konzernforschung der Carl Zeiss AG an den Standort Jena, um hier Forschungsergebnisse noch unmittelbarer in industrielle Produkte übertragen zu können. Hier wirkte er als Abteilungsleiter Microscopic Imaging von Corporate Research & Technology der Carl Zeiss AG. Von August 2015 bis Juni 2018 übernahm Timo Mappes als Senior Vice President Innovation bei der Carl Zeiss Vision International GmbH die globale Verantwortung für die Ressorts Technology & Innovation und Information Technology mit Gesamtprokura. Mit seinem 200-köpfigen Team auf vier Kontinenten verdoppelte er die Patentanmeldungen des Bereichs innerhalb von 3 Jahren, steigerte im selben Zeitraum die Anzahl der erteilten Patente um 50%, brachte neuartige Brillengläser (in optischem Design, Material und Beschichtung) auf den Markt, entwickelte eine hochautomatisierte Brillenglasfertigung mit einer unidirektional verknüpften Logistik und führte diese an Hochlohnkoststandorten ein. Darüber hinaus führte er mit seinem Team das Edutainment bei ZEISS sowohl an Messeständen als auch patentgeschützt am Point-of-Sales ein.

Seit den 1990ern beschäftigte sich Timo Mappes intensiv mit der Geschichte und Entwicklung der Mikroskope für die Wissenschaft im Zeitraum von 1800 bis 1945. Hierzu publizierte er umfangreich und dokumentierte herausragende Objekte unter anderem für ganzseitige Zeitungsartikel, eine deutsche Sonderbriefmarke, Gold- und Silbermünzen sowie internationale Lehr- und Fachbücher. 
Im Juli 2018 wurde Timo Mappes als Universitätsprofessor an die FSU berufen, um als Gründungsdirektor des D.O.M. das interaktives Forschungsmuseum und Leitmuseum der Optik in Jena aufzubauen. Die Details und Entwicklungen hierzu finden Sie auf dieser Webseite.
